The Final Report on the Review of the Mental Health Act 2009 has been released. The SA Law Reform Institute of the University of Adelaide was asked to undertake the independent statutory review.

The Government will now consider the recommendations and work on what the next steps will be, in consultation with key mental health groups and consumers.

Chief Psychiatrist Suicide Prevention Pathway Standard and Guideline for Consultation

In line with the implementation of Towards Zero Suicides (TZS) Initiative in SA Health facilities, a Chief Psychiatrist Standard and Guideline has been developed for the establishment of a Suicide Prevention Pathway (SPP), which is a clinical pathway for people in suicide and self-harm distress.

Mental Health and Emergency Services Memorandum of Understanding 2023

From 1 February 2024 an updated Mental Health and Emergency Services Memorandum of Understanding is in effect. Signed by the Minister for Health, Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Chief Executive Department for Health and Wellbeing, Commissioner of Police, Chief Executive Officer SA Ambulance Service and Chief Executive Officer, Royal Flying Doctor Service, the MOU establishes an agreed framework to ensure that people who have or appear to have a mental illness receive safe transport and timely access to assessment and treatment services. The MOU is supported by Local Liaison Groups in each area.

CAMHS APY Lands Service Progress Review

In November 2021 the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist undertook an independent review of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjajara (APY) Lands. In 2023 the Office undertook a follow-up review to consider progress in re-establishing services.
