The Mental Health Act 2009 provides principles and requirements for the treatment of people with mental illness who are at risk. The Act gives trained health professionals limited powers to provide assessment, transport, custody and treatment to people who have, or appear to have, mental illness and who are at risk of harm. The Act also provides rights and protections for people who have mental illness, and their carers and families.
